This results in painful blisters \u2013 both internal and external from the slightest knock or bumps \u2013 for thousands of people worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Epidemiology<\/strong>:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0United States National Epidermolysis Bullosa Registry<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>claims that the overall incidence and prevalence of epidermolysis bullosa in the US is <a href=\"https:\/\/reference.medscape.com\/medline\/abstract\/27463098\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">19.6 and 11.07 cases per 1 million live births<\/a>, respectively.\u00a0\u00a0According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/emedicine.medscape.com\/article\/1062939-overview#a6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Epidermolysis Bullosa Registry<\/a>,<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>the prevalent epidermolysis bullosa cases in Norway is 54 cases per million live births, in Japan is 7.8 cases per million live births, in Italy is 15.4 cases per million live births, in Australia is 10.3 cases per million live births, and in Croatia is 9.6 cases per million live births.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Research Insights:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Irish researchers at UCD claim to have produced a revolutionary solution that uses gene therapy to repair bad cells to make them functioning ones. As per the researchers, the therapy has the potential to provide a permanent cure for patients with Recessive Dystrophic EB, one of the most severe sub-types of the disease \u2013 for which no treatment currently exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The concept has been pioneered by <a href=\"https:\/\/wenxinwang.group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Prof Wenxin Wang<\/a> who has been researching EB for the past ten years, with assistance from Debra Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe best part of this therapy is that it would not involve painful skin grafting procedures or risks associated with viral treatments in delivering functioning genes to the skin,<\/em>\u201d said Dr. Jonathan O\u2019Keeffe Ahern, one of the leading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishcentral.com\/news\/irish-cure-painful-skin-disease\">gene therapy researchers<\/a> in Prof Wang\u2019s team, together with Dr. Irene Lara-S\u00e1ez.
