However, with the number of infected cases in the US surpassing that of China, the focus has shifted from discussing region-specific issues in the supply chain to, identifying technological solutions that can help address the challenges.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/congressional-testimony\/safeguarding-pharmaceutical-supply-chains-global-economy-10302019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"According to the US FDA (opens in a new tab)\">According to the US FDA<\/a>, <em>advanced manufacturing technologies<\/em> could help US-based drug production make up ground against China and other countries.  One such technology that has been put forward as a potential solution is the adoption of continuous manufacturing.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Continuous Manufacturing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Continuous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rootsanalysis.com\/blog\/continuous-manufacturing-a-magic-bullet-to-meet-the-demand-for-pharmaceutical-products\/\">manufacturing<\/a>, also known as continuous flow chemistry, is an advanced manufacturing technology, which drives operations in a continuous manner (24\u00d77) in one facility, without hold times.&nbsp; It is relatively cheaper to build and operate when compared to the traditional batch processes. Some of the key advantages are highlighted below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduction in&nbsp;manufacturing cost&nbsp;(by 15-30%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduction in manpower (by 50-70%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower product deviation (by 50%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smaller footprint requirement (by 50-70%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduction in power consumption (by 40%) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faster scale up. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, the continuous processes use advanced sensors and in-process analytics that enable the measurement of critical parameters and processing conditions in real-time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adoption of Continuous Manufacturing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As per the interviews conducted with industry stakeholders, the industry is currently in the initial stages of adopting continuous manufacturing. However, the ongoing COVID-19 crisis is likely to accelerate the industry&#8217;s shift to these systems. In fact, a number of established big pharma players have already adopted these systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2015, five <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rootsanalysis.com\/reports\/oral-proteins-and-peptides-market\/192.html\">orally administrable drugs<\/a>, manufactured using the continuous technique, have been approved by the FDA; these are DAURISMO\u2122 (Pfizer, 2018), <a aria-label=\"SYMDEKO (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/nda\/2018\/210491Orig1s000ChemR.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SYMDEKO<\/a>\u00ae (Vertex Pharmaceuticals, 2018), <a aria-label=\"VERZENIO (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/investor.lilly.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/verzenior-abemaciclib-significantly-extends-life-median-94\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VERZENIO<\/a>\u00ae (Eli Lilly, 2017), <a aria-label=\"PREZISTA (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanpharmaceuticalreview.com\/news\/62587\/ema-continuous-manufacturing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PREZISTA<\/a>\u00ae (Johnson &amp; Johnson, 2016) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmtech.com\/view\/vertex-receives-fda-approval-continuously-manufactured-drug-product\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ORKAMBI<\/a>\u00ae (Vertex Pharmaceuticals, 2015).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Companies Offering Manufacturing Services<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Presently, over 60 companies across the globe claim to offer manufacturing services using continuous manufacturing techniques. Over 60% of these companies offer services for API manufacturing, while only 37% offer drug product manufacturing services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The majority of the companies that offer continuous manufacturing are currently based in the US and Europe. According to experts, academic research in this space is relatively stronger in the European region.
