Depending upon the temperature range for effective preservation, biopreservation media is classified into media for hypothermic preservation and biopreservation media for cryopreservation bags and freezing bags<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hypothermic preservation occurs at temperatures above the freezing point of the solution but below the normothermic range of the cells, tissues and organs. Hypothermic biopreservation media allows short-term biopreservation in the refrigerated temperature range, generally from 2\u00b0C (35.6\u00b0F) to 8\u00b0C (46.4\u00b0F). On the contrary, cryogenic bags<\/a> require the presence of cryoprotective agents in the media for the long-term bio-storage, generally below -80\u00b0C (-112\u00b0F) and typically below -140\u00b0C (-220\u00b0F). Over the years, the commercially available cryopreservation media have been preferred over the home-brew formulations. This can be attributed to the elimination of the factor of variability and the urgency of qualification bound to home-brew formulations. The advancements and research in the field of cellular therapies, regenerative medicine, biobanking and drug discovery have led to the demand for biopreservation media in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and healthcare sector.
