BENCHMARKING ANALYSIS

Benchmarking Medical Exoskeletons to
Drive Competitive Clarity

The strategy team of a leading medical exoskeleton developer partnered with Roots Analysis to conduct a structured product competitiveness benchmarking across different exoskeleton categories.

Let's Talk
The Challenge

Benchmarking Medical Exoskeleton Products to
Enable Strategic Decisions

Fragmented Product
Market Visibility

The client faced challenges in developing a consolidated view of competing medical exoskeleton products across body coverage and operating modes. Information was sparsely available in public domain, limiting the client's ability to reliably benchmark its products against relevant competitors.

Unclear Product
Differentiation

The client lacked a standardized framework to systematically compare exoskeleton products at a granular level. This made it difficult to assess relative strengths and weaknesses across critical parameters such as mobility, control mechanisms, advanced features and user–machine interfaces.

Ambiguity in Strategic
Decision Making

Owing to the lack of clear understanding of relative product competitiveness, the client experienced uncertainty in prioritizing product enhancements, defining differentiation strategies and making informed investment and roadmap decisions aligned with long-term market positioning.

The Roots Way

How Roots Helped?

Built on our intellectual capital, we provided a benchmarking framework to evaluate the relative product competitiveness across different peer groups.
Product Landscape Mapping: We conducted a comprehensive mapping of ~210 medical exoskeleton products, compiling detailed information across predefined technical, functional and commercial parameters. Based on body part coverage and mode of operation, products were systematically classified into seven distinct peer groups to enable robust, like-for-like competitive benchmarking.
Scoring Framework: We assessed the relative strength of medical exoskeleton developers using indicators, such as years of establishment, company size and number of medical exoskeletons offered. Further, using a proprietary scoring framework, product-level competitiveness was evaluated based on relevant scores assigned to each product. The scoring was done based on different parameters, including device mobility, form of exoskeleton, mode of operation, advanced features of exoskeleton, user-machine interface, additional services offered, breakthrough designation received and status of development.
4D Competitive Positioning: Insights generated from benchmarking analysis were presented using four-dimensional bubble charts, enabling the client to clearly visualize relative product positioning, competitive intensity and differentiation across peer groups.
