The potential of microfluidic organ-on-chips in precisely mimicking the human body’s microenvironment has completely reformed the drug discovery process, offering an effective ethical alternative to animal-based testing models. We analyzed the key companies that are engaged in providing organ-on-chip technologies / models and chips / plates. In this article, discover the 5 leading organ on chip companies and the organ-on-chip products they offer.
Organ-on-chips are in vitro microfluidic products, housing 3D cultured living cells that mimic the human physiology on a chip, providing in depth descriptions of the cell microenvironment and disease pathophysiology. In the late 1990’s, in the pursuit of identifying efficient, quick and cost-effective drug discovery approaches, Michael Shuler, a chemical engineer at Cornell University, first developed a living human animal-on-a-chip. Later, the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provided additional support grant of USD 37 million to Ingber and his team for the development of 15 organ-on-chip models, featuring the lung, intestine, kidney and bone marrow. Since then, the organ-on-chip domain has witnessed significant advancements, revolutionizing drug discovery and testing while eliminating the need of animal-based models.
Organ-on-chips are developed using microfabrication techniques, by carving microfluidic chambers and channels on a polymer-based chip (usually PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane)). These chambers are then cultured with live cells / tissues of interest, that are continually perfused with cell culture media through the connecting channels. These chips are primarily being developed in two formats: organ / multi-organ specific chips and disease-based chips. Organ / multi-organ specific chips imitate the physiology of a particular organ / multi-organs on a chip, such as the heart, liver, lungs, and others or their combinations. Whereas, the disease based chips aid in studying the key aspects of organ / tumor microenvironment in diseased state, for identifying the drug response across various therapeutic areas.
Given the various advantages of using organ-on-chip for drug discovery, research and ADME toxicology testing studies such as accurate recreation of human biology, animal-free testing and potential in precision medicine by using patient’s samples for testing, organ-on-chips are witnessing widespread adoption in the healthcare domain. Further, considering the expanded research and development efforts of stakeholders in this domain, the organ-on-chip market is poised to grow at a significant growth rate.
