PATENT AND IP ANALYSIS

Navigating LNP Innovation: From Raw Patent Data
to Risk-Mitigated Market Entry

In the highly competitive and litigious LNP drug delivery landscape, a Japanese pharmaceutical company utilized strategic patent intelligence and IP benchmarking to guide its market entry. By systematically identifying untapped innovation areas, the organization established a clear R&D trajectory that optimized product development and mitigated the risk of intellectual property disputes

Let's Talk
The Challenge

Identifying Strategic Innovation Opportunities in
Lipid Nanoparticle Drug Delivery

Strategic Blind
Spots

Incomplete visibility into global patents landscape pertaining to lipid nanoparticle drug delivery systems restricted strategic R&D planning and innovation prioritization across key jurisdictions and technology clusters

Unclear Technology
Valuation

The leadership team required reliable patent valuation metrics for competing lipid nanoparticle drug delivery technologies to identify synergies, quantify cost savings and assess potential investment risks for new product development

Freedom to Operate (FTO)
Paralysis

High FTO uncertainty created significant legal risks, stalling the development of new products, delaying critical investment into high-growth areas and eventually resulting in postponing market entry

The Roots Way

How Roots Helped?

We deployed a structured patent and IP Analysis focused on lipid nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems across major jurisdictions, combining landscape mapping, CPC based technology clustering and white space identification. The engagement delivered a consolidated view of active and pending patents, technology trends and unaddressed areas, tailored to client's targeted focus areas and planned development timelines.
Overall IP Landscape: We conducted detailed patent searches using relevant keywords and downloaded information on 5,250+ patents, including simple family datasets, published within a specific timeframe. This dataset was analyzed across parameters, such as jurisdiction, patent type, kind code, time to expiry, innovation type and claim validity.
Patent Valuation: In order to assess the economic value of patents, we defined a strategic framework incorporating qualitative and quantitative factors that determine commercial significance. Using this framework, patents were analyzed with established parameters such as time to expiry, citation count, patent type and jurisdiction.
Freedom-to-Operate Analysis: We applied our proprietary approach to identify unique innovation areas within the overall landscape of granted patents and patent applications. Analysis of key factors across relevant patent families provided insights into patentability scope and freedom to operate within the lipid nanoparticle drug delivery domain.
White Space Analysis: To support our client in building their R&D blueprint, we identified opportunity gaps in the lipid nanoparticle drug delivery technology domain. Innovation categories plotted against application areas revealed cold spots as potential white spaces with high freedom to operate and strong patentability potential for product differentiation.
